The Election – picture book for preschoolers

I wasn’t entirely sure about a picture book about The Election when I spotted the opportunity to review this book. I always think it’s a lot more interesting to have a fun book that’s a bit fantastical, but N does seem to relate well to factual books.

The Fisherton Press book is written by Eleanor Levenson, and illustrated by Marek Jagucki. It doesn’t feel as glossy in texture compared to many picture books we’re used to reading, but that doesn’t worry N.  When I suggested we read the book, he was happy to try it out at the first time of asking.

The aim of the book is to be the first introduction to an election and politics for young children ahead of the 2015 General Election.  It certainly does that telling the story of Alex’s family who backs the Stripy party, and his neighbour Evie, whose family supports the Spotty party.  It takes the story through the families handing out leaflets, canvassing for votes down the street, and then voting.  Oh and not forgetting the disappointment for one family.  It also explains what a party does, about promoting their policies and ideas on how the country should be run.

Everything is explained is straightforward language, and you see some of the competition between the two friends, but all very friendly and light hearted.  No trashing the other party’s ideas like you might hear in a real life election period.

N seemed quite interested as we read through the story although he didn’t ask any questions.  I was astounded though that he chose to read it the next day as well.  Usually a new book takes a while to be read and reread.  The second time I asked him if he remembered what it was about and he did remember.

I think all children to have an understanding of what an election is about, the same as I believe everyone should make the effort to vote, so The Election book does exactly what it says on the tin, talking about elections in simple language.

  1. All workers entitled to have all school holidays off work at full pay – and I’d ban all holiday companies from increasing their prices during these weeks 🙂

  2. I would make everyone clear the front of their house when it snows & people who are claiming benefits & that are able & seeking work can help out the people who cannot.

  3. I would make it compulsory for every school to be fully disability-accessible, in order to brake down barriers.

  4. It should be illegal to serve food without dessert and the dessert should be completely free.

  5. Subsidised childcare for working parents, and I’d get the schools to stagger their holidays to help avoid the problems with travel companies putting up their prices during the school holidays.

  6. I’d make UKIP illegal and kick Farage out of the country – he causes tension in a time when we need cohesion!

  7. If i were prime minster i would make it that everyone who worked got working tax credits to help those who can only get a job under 24 hours while they are looking for extra work

  8. FREE Dental Care for all. Aimed at keeping / preserving natural teeth if possible. As nothing like a healthy mouth with all natural teeth. False teeth (Veneers, Dental Implants, Bridge etc when required), in order to provide good health care :- Oral, Physical, Emotional, Psychological, Mental, Healthy Self-Esteem, Good Digestion, Good Communication etc, etc, etc.

  9. I would make it £15 per hour for the national minimum wage that way people could afford to work part time and spend a little more time with their children if they wanted to x

  10. I’d ban the public from purchasing fireworks except for public organised events.

  11. Horse riders should pick up after their horses. I know it breaks down, unlike dog mess, but its still not nice to find a great pile of it in your path.

  12. Controlled rents for privately rented accommodation. I pay a fortune each month for the privilege of living in London. A place I was born and raised in. Grrrr!

    1. I would have thought there would be some control / limits etc. Apparently Tony Blair (ex-prime minister rents out properties privately. Those properties may be in London.Maybe a limit should be set :- House /Home for individual/s, rather than homelessness etc. As apparently there are many who would like to own their own home, yet do not have the opportunity due to lack of housing, lack of finances etc.

  13. I would initiate a law that all politicians have to come from the area they want to represent – namely, lived there all their life

    1. Good idea. Live and work within their Community. As can attend meetings, or be involved in meetings via technology (mobile phone, computer etc.

  14. no more people entering the uk, because hospitals are suffering, no houses, no jobs

  15. Make it compulsory to vote – If you don’t like any of the candidates, spoil you’re paper. Not voting just lumps you in with the can’t be bothered. If a huge percentage spoiled their votes that would send a message to the politicians!

  16. I would make every British citizen read at least one Historical book from start to finish so that they had some idea of where they came from and who created their world

  17. If I were Prime Minister, I’d set up subsidized childcare in workplaces so that working parents could see their children during break times in the day.
