Month of firsts 12

August’s month of firsts is going to be a short one.  We had lots of fun at weekends and the week off we had before the school term started, but in terms of milestones and achievements it’s been more of the same.

N’s final year before school has been pretty momentous in terms of milestone achievements – learning to ride a bike being the biggest.  There’s still the writing his name to be managed…he gets half way through it, then tells me ‘Mummy, my name’s too long’.  Oh well, I’m sure he’ll learn to complete it over the next few weeks at school.

In August, N

Can now do up zips fully

He’s been able to zip up for ages, once the zip ends were together, but this month, all of a sudden he’s been able to join the ends, hold and zip up.  He’s managed trousers, coats, and hoodies, so he’s well set for starting school.

That’s zips, buttons, hook and eyes, all ticked off.  Just shoe laces to be learnt and practised over the next year.

Went down a water slide

N’s always been a bit funny with slides.  He loves them…once he gets on them.  But it takes him a long time to decide to go down, once he’s climbed to the top.  Usually he’ll go up and down the steps a few times before the descent on the slide happens.

On holiday in Weymouth, we went to Splashdown in Poole.  Lots of flumes, all to big for N, but there was also a little slide in the under 5’s pool.  It was really small, and lots of younger children were going down it.  But not N.

But a month later during a couple of days off nursery and work, we went to a different swimming pool near home.  The splash pool for younger children was great for N. He could stand in most of it, so it gave him lots of confidence, and meant he didn’t need to wear his float belt.  There was a small water slide – really small, just a toddler slide really.  But N was straight on it. No worrying. Straight on and down, over and over again.

Maybe he’ll be a bit more confident in trying other water slides in future now.

  1. I must say I love the idea of this blog post “firsts”. I think sometimes as adults we just rush around in life we do not enjoy the small things, so reading about them brings so much joy to me and reminds me of my own childhood. Well done to N on his small but big firsts this month and best of luck to all the firsts to come 🙂

    1. Thanks Tara. Lovely comment. I’m really pleased I started it. I guess there’ll be fewer firsts as he grows up, but it’s nice to have a record and celebrate them.

      Thanks for commenting.

  2. It’s so cute seeing little learns new things and grow up – like learning how to use a zip. There things that come so easily to us adults we often take it fr granted that someone had to be patient and teach us this xx

  3. Sounds like the little guy has been learning a lot! I’ve been to splashdown when I was younger and the slides do look scary! Just wait a few years and you’ll be dragging him away when it’s time to leave 😉 Xx

  4. Love the idea of documenting firsts every month. And well done to your little man on his achievements in August 🙂 My husband is from Poole and used to talk about Splashdown all the time!

    1. Do come and link up if you’ve got any firsts of your own.

Splashdown was great, but I had expected a pool with flumes rather than just flumes. Great fun for older kids though (and adults!)

  5. It’s amazing to see your child learn and grow right before your eyes. Even more amazing when they manage to do something for the first time and you’re just looking at them in disbelief! 🙂
