How to pimp your pumpkin the easy way – Sharpie pumpkin art

Every year I’m late with my pumpkin and autumn posts, but I like to take time to reflect!  And hey, I’m not yet talking Christmas. Here’s my easy way to pimp your pumpkins and create pumpkin art with Sharpies.

N was looking forward to having a pumpkin, so I agreed again we would carve one.  We chose a medium sized one this year – much easier to lug around and it was really quick to carve out.

Last year, I bought a poundshop carving kit which was rubbish.  Then I used N’s kiddycutter knife which was brilliant, except I was a little tough on it and broke it.  Oops.   This year I’d planned to buy a really good kit, but in the end forgot about it, so ended up buying another cheap one from Home Bargains for 89p.  It was brilliant. Much better than last years.  In fact I wish I’d bought a couple.

I really wanted to do a cool design on the pumpkin but N wanted a face again.  I say it every year, but next year I will buy 2 pumpkins, one for him and one for me.

N drew the face he wanted – half with a smile and half an angry grimace, so we got scraping out the insides, drawing on, pricking the outline and then cutting out.  While I was carving, N was enjoying separating out the seeds from the straggly insides.

Once it was done, I then couldn’t find my LED tea lights, so we didn’t actually have it lit…oh, and we carved it too early so by the 30th October it was already going furry and was turfed outside.  Yuck.

Luckily, on a shopping trip, I’d let N choose a couple of munchkin pumpkins, the little mini ones.  There was no way I was attempting to carve those, so N got the paints out while I got out the Sharpies.

Unfortunately, kids paints don’t really dry on pumpkins, so N decided he wanted to wipe the paint off and use my Sharpies.  They’re the way to go for pumpkin decorating because they just dry there and then.  And the colours still show the same.  With a white pumpkin you’d have more choice of colours, but ours worked fine.

We just did random things, but next year, I shall pimp my pumpkins and plan my designs in advance.

Maybe we’ll go pastelmetallic, rhinestonedglitteredwashi tape, or even studded.

We might not have had a lit up pumpkin this year, but our little munchkin pumpkins did the job to make it feel a bit halloween-y.

  1. I love the idea of painting pumpkins these look so cute. I think the kids and I might paint some next year. Great idea. Thank you for linking up to Share With Me and I hope to see you again tomorrow for another great round. #sharewithme

  2. They look great. And I think I’d love a sequinned one, but not sure about the studded ones 🙂 And if you can spare N to separate the seeds from the other bits I think you could make a fortune there – it’s a job I detest!

    1. Yes, the sequin one is brilliant. I think I’d have just used drawing pins to mark out an image or shapes rather than the raised studs

  3. Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought the pound shop pumpkin kits were rubbish! I bought the 89p one from home bargain this year and it was great! There stencils were cool, too. I think they were 89p as well.
I love that you used sharpies and paints, they look fab 😀 xx

  4. Love the idea of using Sharpies to decorate 🙂 we brought some little ones too and I was wondering what to do with them. I think my favourite pimped pumpkin is the sequin one! Would look fab with a candle next to it picking out the sparkles! xx

  5. People do such cools things with pumpkins don’t they? I really like how you painted yours. I think I’ll have to do that next year 🙂

  6. I love some of the simple pumpkin crafts involving paint and markers! On Pinterest they look so elegant. My own versions, slightly less so! x
