Tops tips – preparing to move house

This is a collaborative post

Nowadays most people don’t stay living in the same house forever. I’ve moved many times over the years since finishing uni, but much to N’s disappointment, it’s likely he’ll not get to move house before he’s an adult. You can’t just move a farm!

But for those who do move, moving to a new home is an exciting yet stressful time in life. While you’re getting ready to embark on a new adventure, you want to make sure you keep everything you’re bringing with you from your old residence to your new home safe. Follow the tips below to transition your items from one house to another as smoothly as possible.

Make an inventory of your belongings

Make a plan before you start packing.

Getting a detailed inventory of what you’re moving will go a long way toward keeping yourself organised throughout the move. Once you get to your new house, check your inventory list before you begin unpacking. One of the simplest ways to organise objects for your move is through colour coding. Use different colour duct or packaging tape on each box to help keep your belongings easily organised.

Use protective materials

When moving larger furniture, make sure that each piece is securely in place. If the pieces of furniture move around in the moving truck, you increase the risk of damage to these items. Securing and protecting larger, more delicate furniture is crucial to moving successfully.

First, protect larger furniture with old bedsheets or towels to reduce the risk of damage. Next, make sure you secure each piece before transporting your belongings. You’ve spent all this time moving your valuables, so spend a few extra minutes and make sure they arrive in the same condition they left.

Protect your most valuable items

You’ll undoubtedly have some high-value items that you’ll need to move into your new home. Whether these items are high in monetary value or high in sentimental value, you’ll want to make sure they arrive at your new home safely. Use a full-service moving company such as Blue Whale Moving and Storage  to make sure that high-value items get moved personally and discretely. Separate these items from other items to make sure that your valuables are not lost among the chaos of a move between homes.

Even the most organised people will struggle with misplacing and distinguishing packaging between box to box. You’ll want to make sure that your most essential and irreplaceable belongings are separate from ordinary, day-to-day household items.

Pack Efficiently

Moving between different homes and environments can be chaotic and extremely stressful at times. Nothing could be worse than misplacing your keys or losing your work laptop during a move. While you account for your high-value items first, you’ll also want to make sure that you pack items according to your needs.

If you’re moving in spring, you’ll probably want to pack and prioritise summer items, from swimsuits to gardening tools, over coats and snow boots. If your winter items sit in storage for six months, the impact will be minimal. However, you’ll likely need your swimsuit and flip-flops within the next few weeks of your move.

Moving from one home to a new home is not an easy process. You have to consider many aspects of moving to make sure your possessions get transported safely to your new home, so you can get settled in quickly and enjoy that first celebratory drink there.
