Perfect baby gifts for new mums

I’ve always bought something for the mum in the past when there’s been a new arrival. Something like nail polish (they’ll be able to reach their toes again) or a really nice body lotion.  However since becoming a mum, I’ve changed my mind about perfect gifts for new mums.

While I do love nail polish, especially as I’ve finally managed to grow my finger nails, and have nice toes now I’ve not wrecked them by dancing for the last 8ish months, I got given quite a few body lotions which aren’t my cup of tea (although they never really had been anyway).  Instead, I’ll be religiously continuing with [amazon_textlink asin=’B0015HJG6Q’ text=’Palmers Cocoa Butter’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’bubbaandme-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’bc04e988-d6c5-11e8-bc16-b196b8052f02′] and [amazon_textlink asin=’B00129XP8M’ text=’bio oil’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’bubbaandme-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’d2af384f-d6c5-11e8-9f42-fd5b4b267cdc’] to ease those stretch marks away and the other body lotions will be forgotten about.

The best presents we received for N (apart from clothes which are lovely but sometimes you wonder whether they’ll get more than one wear out of them) were:

1,  A beautiful keepsake hand finished blanket which had been personalized with his name, birthdate plus something personal to us – a tractor and sheep which is perfect given he’s a farmer’s son.

2, Weaning supplies, ie plates, bowls, spoons, beakers etc. There’s nothing like being prepared.

3, A fabulous Emma Bridgewater farming melanine crockery set. These sets last for years.

4, Wooden letters spelling his name which now take pride of place on his bedroom door.

So what would I now buy new mums?  I decided that baby gifts should be the things that make life easier but that as a new mum you might not have heard about.

Great baby gifts for new mums

Here’s some of the presents I’ve bought for friends having babies since having N:

  • Sock ons. Ingenious little fabric bands that go over socks to keep them on, and which were invented by a mum of 5 boys.
  • Dribble bibs. We used Funky Giraffe bibs by the website of the same name, although they can be found on eBay. There are masses of colours and designs to choose from and N looked quite naked without his bibs once he stopped dribbling.
  • Sophie the Giraffe. Ok so N’s not teething yet which is what people use Sophie for most, but he still likes the squeaky noise she makes and has started using her already.
  • [amazon_textlink asin=’B00922R99C’ text=’Gumigem teething jewellery’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’bubbaandme-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’20ad150c-d6c7-11e8-8c08-6bbc3c0128a7′]. If you feel naked without jewellery on but don’t want your normal necklaces wrecked by grabbing hands, then these are great.  They’re not the only brand out there now, but they are really effective. I rarely wore mine, but they were handy for tying round the shopping trolley for N to chew on while sitting in the seats.
  • Taggy blankets – my supplier is no longer trading, but these blankets are gorgeous and a great comfort for babies who love the ribbons. I made N one myself, and it’s been loved for many years.

That’s my list of the perfect gifts for new mums.  What was the most useful baby gift you were given?  What do you buy for other new mums?
