Being pregnant and going natural

Today, I’ve got a guest post for you from Katie, a US blogger who blogs at Moore from Katie, with her thoughts on going natural through pregnancy.

I have to admit, that pre-pregnancy I was quite healthy, ate well etc, but it all went to pots once I was pregnant as I was just hungry for any food all the time.  I did exercise until 36-ish weeks and not a relaxing yoga class, but if you’re interested in becoming more natural check out Katie’s post below:

Knowing that you will soon give birth to a child is a big deal, I know.  During my pregnancy, it was all I could do not to jump up and down with joy every time I thought about the fact that I was about to have a new baby.  The only thing that was more important to me than becoming a great mom was making sure that my baby was healthy and developing at the right pace.  I knew that her development depended on me, so I chose to make the best possible decisions for my baby and my body.  I decided to start living a little more naturally so that I could be as healthy as possible.

Before making too many big changes, I sat down with my doctor to be sure my changes would satisfy my growing baby’s needs.  My doctor was the best resource for me to turn to with my pregnancy questions.  From cloth diapers to cord blood banking, we discussed all of my options during my term to have me ready for delivery and motherhood.

I know a lot of people might be a little scared to to go natural, but it’s not difficult at all. I planned on going natural by buying all organic products at the grocery store and my biggest concern was that I wouldn’t be able to find what I wanted.  I was afraid that I’d have to say goodbye to all my favorite foods, but I didn’t.  I was able to continue buying all the same things I’ve always purchased, only organic instead of treated with chemicals and other harmful substances.  By following the Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen guide and shopping at farm stands and farmer’s markets, I was able to keep my favorite produce stocked.

In addition to going all-natural in my diet, I decided to take as much of a natural approach to pain and aches as I could.  I know that many medications are not safe for pregnant women to use, which is why our doctors tell us not to take them. and there are natural alternatives.  One of the best things I did for myself during my pregnancy was turn to massage therapy to help with my sore muscles.  Toward the end of my pregnancies my lower back hurt pretty often, and massage therapy helped significantly.

Exercise was another big help for me when I was pregnant.  I learned that yoga was so good for my headaches that I rarely got them anymore as long as I did yoga every day.  Maybe it was the fact that yoga makes you focus only on your body and your movements rather than everything else, such as my aching head.

While my changes seemed huge at the time, I always tell anyone who asks that becoming more natural in the choices I make is the best thing I’ve ever done for my health and my family’s health.
