How to Catch a Star 10th Anniversary – activities and giveaway

I initially picked up a second hand copy of How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers from a nearly new sale and it’s one of those lovely books that are so suitable for bedtime stories.   I hadn’t realised it was the 10th anniversary of the book this year, but was happy to share what we love about the book on receiving an anniversary pack.

How to catch a star

When the book was published in 2004, it launched the now celebrated author and illustrator Oliver Jeffers.  He’s since gone on to win various awards, including the (surely coveted) Blue Peter book of the year.

I think the book’s simple illustrations really reflect the message in the story, that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.  Of course, you can reach for the stars, like the little boy in the book who manages to find his own version of a star.  N liked the book immediately as he’s quite interested in the moon and stars, but the anniversary edition adds to the old version with previously unpublished drawings and a letter from the author.

In our pack we also received some glow in the dark stars.  N straight away wanted me to open them up, so hopefully he’ll be as keen as me once we get some activities going.  I’m not sure his dad will be keen to see them go on the ceiling, but I’m thinking they could be a great way of teaching N the different constellations.  I still remember quite a few now from when we learnt them in Brownies, so I’m all for teaching him some with these stars.

If you’re looking for some activities to do with your children, then feel free to download the activity sheets here. How to Catch a Star Activity Sheets. They include dot to dot, a maze, make a mobile and a variety of other tasks to enjoy the story of How to Catch a Star.

The anniversary edition is on sale from the 27th March at Amazon for £12.99, and is suitable from 2 years old (although I’d say if you get a board book version like we have, even younger children will enjoy looking at the night time pictures).

I’ve also been sent a second copy of the 10th anniversary edition to giveaway on my blog.  You can enter via the Rafflecopter below – just choose the options you want to enter by, then come back and click on the enter button once you’ve completed the task.  T&Cs are on the widget, but please note I will be validating entries before the winner is drawn.  The closing date is 6th April, 11.59pm
