Season of mists – what makes autumn season special?

Keats called it the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’. The autumn season has 2 start dates – 1st September and after the Autumn Equinox near the end of the month.

Autumn is pretty spectacular and has plenty of reasons why it’s so special,  including the fact that people born in autumn tend to live longer.

I love autumn and it seems that everyone else seems to as well. Ok, maybe not the rain, gloomy evenings drawing in, and having to wear socks after living in flip flops all summer. But autumn has an awful lot going for it.

What makes autumn special?

  • Beautiful autumn colours as the leaves change colour
  • Kicking leaves
  • Collecting conkers
  • Early morning mist
  • Seeing the sunrise and sunset
  • Dew in the mornings and pretty spiders webs
  • Clocks going back (in theory an extra hour in bed)
  • Picking apples off our trees
  • Picking pumpkins
  • Halloween activities on days out – toffee apples, apple bobbing
  • Bonfire night and fireworks
  • Hunkering down in the house
  • Warming stews, mashed potato, soups and comfort food
  • Hot chocolate
  • Puddings with custard
  • Covering up with chunky jumpers
  • Rich jewel colours in autumn fashions (unfortunately this year it seems to include a lot of mustard)
  • Party tops and dresses in the shops– finally I can update my dance wardrobe
  • Woolly hats
  • Scarves – for me pashmina style rather than woolly
  • Pumpkin spiced biscuits, cake and pie
  • Starting to think about Christmas – booking concerts, panto, the ballet, Christmas light displays at stately homes and National Trust
  • Half term
  • Harvest festival – hearing children performing their first class performances of the year

And for our us,

  • Birthdays galore – me, my father-in-law, brother-in-law, nephew, a lot of friends’ birthdays
  • Shoot season starts – which means when the OH is out doing that, I get to cook exactly what I want to cook and not just what he’ll eat. Time for curry, stir fries, toad in the hole and risotto.
  • Harvest is over which means more dancing is back on the agenda
  • Not getting hot before I’ve even walked into dancing
  • The Michaelmas Fair in town

  1. I absolutely love autumn too and still some bits you have mentioned to get through before winter is upon us! Great round up! #sharingthebloglove

  2. Lovely photos! I am much more of a summer person, but I do love bonfire night and fireworks. For me that’s the best thing about Autumn. The grey skies and mist can do one! #SharingtheBlogLove

  3. What gorgeous photos – I especially like the conker one – and such a lovely reminder of all the nice things about Autumn. I do quite like Autumn once I’ve resigned myself to it being here – but I always have a period of mourning for the end of summer before I can start to enjoy all the nice things Autumn has to offer. Conkers, pretty leaves, hot chocolate and harvest festivals would be my favourite things about Autumn 🙂 #sharingthebloglove

  4. I wish Autumn was treasured and celebrated in Australia, we don’t really get the same experience here because it stays so hot! Love reading these posts #sharingthebloglove

  5. What a great list. I love the misty mornings. Gorgeous photos too x

  6. You had me at Keats 🙂 Lovely post, so uplifting and positive with gorgeous pics. I feel the same way about the colours – I was mesmerised by a tree outside work this week, its leaves gorgeous golds and reds. And hot chocolate!!! For me it’s a wonderful time to snuggle up and watch a movie with my loved ones x #SharingTheBlogLove

    1. Thank you Michelle. Lovely to hear readers enjoying my posts.

The trees round here are quite spectacular. I’m thinking I may need a trip to an arboretum tomorrow instead of to a museum I was planning on.

  7. I’m happy for the influx of mustard as a colour choice for this season! Also very much excited about hot chocoalte 😀

  8. Oohh great list. I love all the amazing colours and the Christmas fairs. Nothing is quite like a good Christmas fair! x #sharingthebloglove

  9. This is beautiful – what gorgeous photos! It is a big season of birthdays for us too! I love everything you mentioned, I even like the drizzly days, the gloomy nights and the woolly socks 🙂 #sharingthebloglove

    1. Aw thank you. Woolly socks are great (in the house only!) although generally after summer I hate the restriction of socks. It does mean though that no flip flops mean feet are nice and soft and well tended again! Mine are always horrible after the summer of being basically barefoot.

  10. I love autumn, just for the sake of pumpkin patch farm. I just love Halloween feel, so festive and joyful. Autumn is elegant indeed.

  11. I’m a summer girl at heart, but I been embracing Autumn so much more this year. I think it’s because we’ve been really lucky with the weather. I love the walks in the woods and heading off for a hot chocolate to warm up. Thank you for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  12. There’s so much to love about autumn, but for me it’ll never top summer! That said, I love all of the things you’ve listed (even the mustard in fashion this year!), but hot chocolate has to top my list! You’ve just given me a massive craving for toad in the hole too – with lots of thick onion gravy! Gotta pile on the pounds for winter 🙂 Thanks for joining us again at #SharingtheBlogLove

    1. Thanks for the comment Katy. I love toad in the hole, or sausage casserole or anything like that. But the OH only likes sausages on their own without being shoved in other things. We tends to have it with beans though. Never thought of having onion gravy, bet that’s delicious.

  13. I do love autumn! We had our first stew of the season last night. And i do love a bit of mustard fashion. Boots, coats and leaf kicking are a few of my favourite things. Thanks for sharing #thelist

    1. It’s lovely isn’t it. Coats I struggle with at the moment – whole wardrobe full, half don’t quite fit, I don’t want to buy anymore, and then I wear them and just boil in them. Need to sort out my internal temperature I think. Thanks for stopping by

  14. I love this time of year! Autumn is my favourite season! I love the colours, the smell of Autumn… The mist, Halloween… Just everything! 🙂 Lovely post #TheList

    1. Thanks Sarah. I love it too. It’s really homely, and walking in it is comfortable (unlike summer when it can be too hot), and lovely with all the colours.

  15. Autumn and spring are my joint favourite seasons – both full of turning weather, and both the opposite ends of the plant-life spectrum! Love your list of reasons for loving autumn, the majority of them are mine also. And seeing someone talk about the shooting season is such a blast of nostalgia for me. I grew up on farms and used to get dragged out to shoots by my dad each autumn. I kind of miss those days!

    1. Hi Halina, usually mentioning shoots, loses me lots of followers so nice to hear from someone who experienced them in the past. I like the atmosphere and seeing everyone come back to the farm afterwards – nice to see it busy. Although I’ve never been on one myself – I think I’d get bored of the walking and the dog wouldn’t obey me! The one time I tried clay shooting I was shocking so I’ve never tried that again either. I much prefer nice leisurely walks around lovely grounds rather than hilly fields.
