What makes a happy day for a working school mum

Making the move from mum to school mum (or dad to school dad if you’re the one doing the bulk of the school organisation/admin load) can be a big step. I find there’s big satisfaction when it goes to plan and N gets to school on time, with everything he needs, and nothing is missing by the time he’s home again. But add in being a working mum to the mix as well, and the logistics can get even more complicated.

Here’s some of the things that provide that smug feeling when this working school mum gets it right:

Getting to do the school pick up and drop off. Or just the pick up when the OH has been taking over.

Getting in first to sign up for parents evening and getting the last slot of the evening.

Being able to make sports day / nativity play etc when it falls in suitable time (ie over lunch time or within flexi period).

Remembering to order school lunches…and miraculously choosing the right options that your child would have chosen

Sending your child into school with the right footwear, clothing (clean) and PE/swimming kit/books/spellings etc.

Getting to the end of the year without having lost an item of clothing (may have been lost but also been returned) or water bottle.

Having your child happily telling you everything that’s been going on during their working day, timetabled from start to finish

When your child makes a ‘worry’ bag for everyone in the house to write their worries in, and you ask if they have any worries and they tell you ‘no of course not’.

When your child doesn’t want to sign up for every after school club but is happy just with one which can be worked around with pick ups

When you find a good after school club where they’re happy

When school starts a morning (breakfast) club the year your child starts in reception

Hearing from TAs and other parents about the little quirks and things your child says or does in the classroom. They get to hear them when they go in and read or do activities, but you still get to hear about them.

When school do lots of open mornings so you can see their work, hear about it from them, and have a brief chat to the teacher to hear how well they’re getting on.

When you’re ahead of the game at getting the cheque book out before school have sent the email reminder out.

What would you add to the list as a working school mum?

  1. Being a school mum is practically a full time job! I can’t get over how much there is to do and the constant reminders. Being organised is the only way for me and responding to letters straight away. Thank you for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

    1. I’m just relieved that our school is efficient and send out a lot of communication – Mondays and Fridays, plus any interim reminders. I’m amazed how people do forget!

  2. Oh gosh, this makes me nervous for when Max starts school next year! And it’s likely that I won’t even be working! I need to get more organised, our lives are a mess right now, I’m never going to remember all of the bits he needs. Hopefully by then Ben will be sleeping a bit more and I’ll be less of a zombie! Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  3. Great list! It’s definitely hard work and very stressful at times, but like you say it does make you feel proud when you manage to get everything done at home/school as well as work! #SharingtheBlogLove

  4. There is so much to remember when your kids go to school. There is always something going on.
