Reveal, the family trivia board game with only answers

N has been getting into games for a while now which I’m really happy about. He’s not so good when he always loses against me – he forgets that sometimes he does win. But the OH won’t play games so I’m pleased he’s able to play more complicated games.

We were asked to review Reveal, a new family trivia game from Paul Lamond Games.  It’s for age 8+ but that’s only a few months off for N so we just adapted it a bit when it was his go. As soon as N set eyes on it, he was into the game, setting it up and organising the cards.

Reveal is the game of answers not questions.  Instead of being asked questions, an answer is revealed to you and you get more points, the faster you guess the answer.  The reveals are based on one of 3 topics – film, songs and tv titles.  None of these topicsare really my forte, but it’s great fun and not always as hard as you think.  Well, the songs were difficult because there’s so many more to think of, and you usually tie a song into music so without it, it’s really hard.

The board is well made, the colours and board look quite classy – I prefer a simple board game to a flashy in your face style game.  You can play 2 to 4 players, or in up to 4 teams, so it’s great if you’ve got more people at a party.  I can see me taking this to our traditional New Year’s day gathering to add to the board game session.

Playing the game was good fun. There was no stress from N – I knew he wouldn’t know a lot of the reveal cards, so I chose one of the more easy answers to give him.  You slot the card into the card holder and gradually reveal the answer.  N loved the secret aspect to it, and I enjoyed the word game thinking. Plus for children who play, it’s a great way to get them reading, thinking ahead, and understanding words and potential sentences – even if they don’t know the phrase or name, it’s sometimes possible to work out the answers.

Once you’ve won 15 medals, your player need to make it up the red carpet to the centre where you can answer your final Reveal.

Who’ll like this game:

Families or groups of friends – the game is aimed at 8+, but older children more familiar with more popular culture are going to find it easier.

Pop culture fans – if you know music, movies and pop songs, you’ll be well away.
