Mr Nativity play

N wasn’t in a nativity play last year because he wasn’t in the pre-school room at nursery. But this year he’s one of the eldest and they’re (presumably) preparing for their play which is in a couple of weeks.  I say presumably, because according to N, they’ve not been practising.

Much luckier than me (I only ever got to be a shepherd), N’s going to be a king.  Thankfully nursery sent a letter home saying telling us their parts and I’ve managed to get a wise man costume (thank you supermarkets).  That was easier said than done because there must be a lot of children in our area who will be a king needing age 4-5.  I had to choose a 5-6 but it does fit ok which is a relief.  It’s just a little long.  I have a feeling that the other 2 kings might be in the same outfit…unless they’ve got a parent who can use a sewing machine better than me.  I did debate making a costume but I’ve not used a sewing machine since school, and I need to learn how to use my mum’s one that I’ve now got first, before sending N out in something I’ve made.

I’ve been asking him about the nativity and whether they’ve been practising.  First of all he says no, then he gets a bit more into it and tells me that they’ve been practising before lunchtime.

I’m assured that he knows who’s playing what and who the other kings are.  He tells me that he doesn’t have to say anything; if that’s true at least that prevents him getting stage fright and forgetting or not wanting to say his lines.

I asked if they were singing Away in a Manger.

‘No’  I sang it to him just in case.

‘Little Donkey?’.

‘No.  We’re singing a song about Mr Tivity’. Er ok.

‘Do you want to sing it to me?’

‘No’. Fair enough.

N did seem to like the costume I got him, and refused to take off the crown.  It probably helps that he and his friend J like to dress up in the princess fancy dress costumes at nursery school, so he’s used to being in a ‘dress’.

I need to work out whether I can get into work late that morning so I can go and watch it.  Hopefully none of the parents said they didn’t want others taking photos, so that we can all get photos of our children’s first nativity play.  I’m sure it’ll be one of many.

Are your children in a nativity play this year?  What role are they playing – are any being random roles in ‘alternative’ nativities?

  1. This is going to be SO gorgeous. Grace’s first nativity was in nursery and she was an angel – she has been that twice now! Last year she was a sheep and this year she is a narrator, along with the rest of her year! Have a great time – and take tissues. Thank you for linking to #PoCoLo 🙂 x

    1. I haven’t quite worked out my timings with work yet. Luckily it’s early enough that I should be able to get in a bit late and make up the time, but I wouldn’t want to miss it.

  2. First nativity plays are wonderful, if a little chaotic 😉 supermarkets are great for costumes for those of us who can’t brave the sewing machine! Hope you all enjoy it x

  3. Aww! How sweet! My girls schools only do the nativity plays for the nursery and reception classes….They just have a carol service now they’re older 🙁
    Have a wonderful time! x

  4. Hope all goes well with N’s nativity – so impressed that there are so many costumes available in the supermarkets now, must make life so much easier. I was always a shepherd too – dressing gown and tea towel on the head was the standard costume back then. My two are still too little for nativity plays although our Christmas card last year was Jessica dressed as Mary and 6 week old Sophie in a basket as the baby Jesus 🙂

    1. Aw, bet that Christmas card was really cute. Definitely a life saver having supermarkets, ebay and Amazon for costumes. Although not as fun as the ones of old. My mum always used to make ours. I have her sewing machine, I just need lessons now to learn how to use it.
