Music Exploration 19 – Christmas carols and french songs

We’ve not focused on music much this month.  Although with Christmas coming, music has been high on the agenda by default.

This month we’ve

Sung

Nativity songs

N had his nativity play which was ‘There’s a miracle in town’.  He was a villager, but that meant singing virtually all the songs along with the actions.  He loves to sing and I’ve been able to hear him practising around the house.  I don’t recognise any of the songs, apart from Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes which I’m presuming wasn’t part of the nativity play.

I never thought I’d hear a song from him called Razzle Dazzle, including jazz hands, but he was singing it to me even after the show was over.

Done the actions to

I’m a little snowman.  Think the tune of I’m a little teapot.  His class sang the song along with actions at the school Carol Concert.  I love watching N.  He’s come on so much even since harvest festival back in October.  Back then, he half-hid behind another boy next to him, but now he’s standing in line singing along and seemingly happy to be performing.  I just need to get him up to speed with Christmas carols and their words now.

Listened to

Christmas songs

This isn’t too unusual given N’s been playing my Christmas cds all year.  But we’ve been spotting the Christmas songs on the radio, singing along and N’s been announcing which he likes best….John Lennon’s War is Over. Uh, I’m not a fan, but it’s the first track on my Christmas compilation so of course N loves that one the most.

Practising

French.  And singing along to his La Jolie Ronde cd that he had when he was at nursery.

N doesn’t do french any more.  They do have a french club at school but he doesn’t go, and won’t then do french formally until he’s 7.  I’m hoping he doesn’t forget it all, but I was impressed he could still remember some of the songs on the cd.

What’ve you been up to musically this month?

  1. Apart from listening to Christmas music in work and on music stations on TV we haven’t done may music. Unless you wanna count the drums by my 10 months old.

    1. Lol. Drums or playing pots and pans are the natural start point for picking up rhythms, so just keep encouraging that, and making different sounds with different items. It all counts and helps the way they hear different sounds in future.

  2. I love the idea of encouraging a child’s development through music. Fun for everybody concerned.

  3. This is such a fab post. I love music as a method of helping children grow and develop and at one point wanted to go back to uni and do a master in music and early years education so this really interested me. Thanks for sharing. I also didn’t recognise the nativity songs in my daughters play last year…very modern!

  4. I haven’t come across your linky before but I love it, L is a bit young possibly for me to find much to write about but I will be reading along with interest. Music is a big deal in our house and hopefully i’ll be able to foster a love of it in her too.
Your little one looked so sweet as a villager and it must be great to see him gaining confidence infont of a crowd.

  5. It’s amazing how much progress they make in a year, isn’t it?! Great that he’s not hiding anymore and comfortable singing to an audience đŸ˜‰ His costume reminds me of all the tea towels I had to wear on my head in nativity plays as a child!

  6. Music is a great way for kids to express themselves, I worked in a childcare centre when travelling Australia and I just loved hearing the kinder kids singing, no particular song just made up lyrics but never the less it’s great to see them practising đŸ™‚ x

    1. Yes, so much better nowadays, they have to start learning earlier which means they get started before they get self conscious and probably when they absorb more information
