Fun family days out in Buckinghamshire
We love a day out whether it’s just a weekend day popping out somewhere, or a day out while on holiday. I’m reliving my childhood visiting around the UK, near home and further away, and love sharing it with N. So if you’re looking for days out in Buckinghamshire, you’re in the right place.
This series of days out posts are based on round ups of places we’ve loved on our travels. Hopefully it’ll make them easier for you to find, especially if you’re looking for recommendations for places to visit. I’ll also be including recommendations from other bloggers, because if you’re looking for guidance on where to go you want to hear from local people as well as visitors to an area.
Museums, culture and history
Roald Dahl Museum, Great Missenden
For fans of Roald Dahl’s books and characters, learn about the author’s life, try on old school uniforms, and try your hand at writing your own stories. Small cafe which isn’t suitable for bringing pushchairs in.
Explore the centre of coding and messenging during the World Wars and find out how the staff lived and worked there.
National Trust
Stunning de Rothschild gothic manor house with huge grounds, aviary, stable house, lots of children’s activities and unmissable Christmas displays.
Stowe Gardens, Nr Buckingham
Set in the grounds of Stowe School (occasionally outside of term time the hall is open to visitors), beautiful gardens complete with temples, lake, beautiful bridges, and walks amongst the sheep. Something new to see every time. It’s a long walk down from the entrance, but there is a ‘buggy’ service if your legs need a break.
Claydon Middle Claydon
Ornate and uniquely decorated National Trust house. No photos can be taken in the house. The National Trust only has control of the house, so if you want to see the formal gardens, there’s an additional cost to pay.
Home of the former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, the house, gardens and grounds are accessible.
Wildlife and nature
Eco friendly farm park – it’s not huge, but plenty of animals to see, a nice outdoor play around with undercover benches for picnics in the rain. Indoor soft play. Eating in the soft play area is basic, with hot food available through the
Odds Farm Park near Newbury
Lovely farm park with lots of animals, maze, tractor rides, huge sandpit and play areas, , lovely tea room, soft play and seasonal activities held in school holidays. Great for toddlers and younger school children in particular.
Other
Gulliver’s Land Milton Keynes – children’s theme park with rides, JCB zone and more
Brill – walks around the windmill and village
Emberton Country Park near Milton Keynes. Enjoy 2 playgrounds, a lovely little cafe, and plenty of walking around the country park.
Bounce Milton Keynes – brilliant fun at the trampoline venue. Can work out pricy, get there early to avoid it being busy.
Where to stay
Chicheley Hall – for special occasions and romantic getaways, a beautiful old manor house with stunning suites in the main house.
Doubletree Hilton MK – family friendly hotel based in the MK Dons football stadium. Opt for a stadium view room to keep the kids happy.
