Tips for family matching Christmas PJs
We’ve never done the whole matching pyjamas thing, but lots of families do. I do like to treat myself every couple of years to some new pyjamas that may have a Christmas theme. I don’t like spending a lot of money for myself to wear pjs for just a few weeks of the year. But buying everyone in the family matching pyjamas can be really expensive, especially with growing children needing new ones each year.
Of course buying new pjs each time isn’t really very sustainable, especially if children are growing out of them each time, having only worn them across 1 season. At least with adults, they’re unlikely to need to replace them each year. But if you’re after matching ones as a family, then most people will want to buy a set together.
Here’s my tips for buying matching Christmas pyjamas without spending a fortune. And with a slight nod to making it a more sustainable habit.

Tips for Matching Christmas PJs
Buy in the sales – supermarkets and high street stores all have sales and sell matching pjs for the whole family. Christmas pjs can sell out fast if they’re popular ones, but if you’re happy with themed or similar colours rather than perfectly matching, sales might be worth trying.
Use cashback to buy online – if buying online, you should use cashback sites where possible (after all why not get paid to shop if you’re buying anyway). I use Topcashback. While it may only be pennies cashback, over a year it adds up, and you can claim the money to then spend it the following year.
Buy pre-loved. Especially if you’re buying for children, as they grow out of clothing so fast. While you might not want to buy used pjs (I know I wouldn’t), websites like Vinted or even charity shops, do have filters to search by new with or without tags. Save your search and keep an eye out through the year, but especially from around Sept/Oct time.
Go for classic checks or tartan rather than annual trends films if you want to wear for years to come. Although noone outside your home is likely to see them, so it probably doesn’t matter if you’re not wearing the trend each year. Tartan seems popular with M&S* this year, and I love the quality of their pyjamas
Buy festive t-shirts to wear with your normal/plain pj trousers. A cheaper way to do the matching trend.
Choose themed pjs rather than exact matches. For example fairisle design, reindeer, candy canes, or a colour theme. Then everyone gets to choose their own, and you’re less restricted on where you can buy if you’re struggling with sizes.

Buy next size up for children so hopefully they’ll get 2 years wear out of them.
Don’t buy new every year unless you’re building up a stock of them to wear all season.
Wear them all season – from November to end of January (with washing as well) to get the most value out of them. Don’t just buy them for Christmas eve, unless you’re buying a size bigger for kids to make them last longer.
Buy 1 set of adults pyjamas, but buy various sizes of the kids version so they can wear for several years.
Of course the cheapest way is just not to bother. Just choose red or a winter theme so they’ll be relevant for years to come.

I have just bought our matching Christmas pj’s today! We wear them the one’s from previous years through all the seasons, even in the summer so we do get good use of them. The one’s I bought today weren’t the family one’s they were just from the men’s section all in different sizes and worked out cheaper than the one’s under the “family category”. x
