Project 52 2024 week 35

Finally week 35, and we’re on our summer holiday. We were lucky with the weather – only 1 day with rain, the rest supposedly early 20s but feeling a lot warmer with 90% humidity. I’m glad we weren’t at home, as it was due to be hotter there. Here’s our Project 52 for the week.

Sunday – had a good clear run to Anglesey. We went straight to visit Beamaris Castle (in the rain). All the cafes in town were too busy so we grabbed some food from Spar and had a car picnic. My National Trust visit was scuppered as it was closed due to the high winds. So we meandered to Llanfairpwll with the longest name, then to Nelson’s column which I refused to pay £17 for us to climb up. The views would have been fog. We ate in the hotel which was a nice pub too – good food but pretty pricy.

Monday – a day spent back and forth with a lot of walking. We drove early to Newborough / Llandurr beach which is edged with forest. At low tide you can walk across to the island – N was determined to get there even though it seemed like such a long walk there. The beach was vast if tough on the legs walking. The Anglesey Transport Museum was a short stop off, which we both enjoyed. My satnav really didn’t like Anglesey – it sent us round and round before it kicked in to take us back to Beaumaris so we could do a Puffin Island Cruise. We missed the puffins by a couple of weeks, but saw seals, and plenty of other birds. We got pretty wet from the wind over wave splash on the return journey..

Tuesday – we had an early start to catch the ferry to Dublin. Another satnav nightmare – we followed signs to Holyhead straight from the hotel, but satnav didn’t seem to get this, and didn’t have a clue why it was sending me to turn back round all the time. The winds were high so half of the journey was hard to walk on the ferry, but eased off 2 hours in. We dumped the car at the hotel, then got the hop on hop off bus to see lots. But didn’t have a lot of time in Dublin to spend walking around everywhere as I’d hoped plus it was hot. We had dinner before doing the walk back to the hotel which was too hot and sweaty for my liking.

Wednesday – a long drive down to Cork, or Cobh to be more precise. It’s a lovely waterfront little town, with colourful houses. Our hotel was right on the waterfront. We did the Titanic experience which was an interesting tour. Then wandered around the town before chilling out in the hotel. A busy travelling day, but lots of relaxation.

Thursday – woke to a cruise ship docking right outside the next window along from us. Then after breakfast headed off to Limerick for our next stop. We visited King John’s Castle, wandered around, saw the Terry Wogan statue, and a few other sights before back to the hotel for a swim. We had a cheeky dinner experiencing Supermacs (the Irish version of Macdonalds) which N was excited by thanks to Tick Tock knowledge of it.

Friday – a long drive to Galway via the beautiful Cliffs of Moher and The Burren, along the West Atlantic Way to Salthill which is the seaside town part of Galway. Then checked in at the hotel; N was pleased there was a pool, so we enjoyed a quiet swim before going to our first Irish pub for dinner. I was kept awake late thanks to music which was coming from god knows where.

Saturday – a hop on hop off bus tour around Galway, a wander around the Latin Quarter, Galway Market, up by the river, before grabbing some lunch. I’d booked us in to play Disc Golf just outside the city – we weren’t great, although I somehow managed to get in a draw. N wanted another swim but I decided just to supervise and read my Kindle on the side instead.  Another pub meal for dinner, dessert in the bar restaurant at the hotel a bit later on.

No new posts this week.

Things I’ve enjoyed this week:

  • Being away somewhere new.
  • Enjoyed laughs with N
  • Walks – although it’s made me realise how unfit I am, will need to do something about that when I get home.

Things I’m grateful for:

  • Having enough money to have holidays
  • Having a 13 year old who’ll still (currently) come on holiday with me.
  • Having the car with us. So much easier packing wise when you can take overflow stuff if required.
