Best ice cream shops in Oxfordshire
A bit late for National Ice Cream day on 16th July, but I’m bringing you a post about the best ice cream shops in Oxfordshire.
Ice cream is one of the best things about summer and warmer weather. Ice cream is still as popular as ever, with specialist ice cream parlours opening up everywhere. We’ve even got a few near me and wider around the county. Here’s a selection of the best ice cream shops in Oxfordshire.
There’s no Mr Whippy ice cream in these ice cream shops. Often they serve italian style gelato, a lower fat, longer churned and therefore creamier ice cream.
The choices seem never-ending. From traditional vanillas to more exotic flavours. In these specialist shops, they often rotate their special flavours, so keep up with them on social media if you’re looking to try a specific flavour.
Ice cream shops in Oxfordshire
Oxford
G&D Cafe – G&D Cafe have been around in Oxford for years, having several ice cream parlours in the city. In St Aldates (George & Danver), Little Clarendon St (the original George & Davis), and Cowley Road’s George & Delila. Great for late night ice cream as they’re open to 11pm (we used to sometimes go in after dancing in the town hall).
Swoon, High St – classic italian flavour gelato plus some more interesting creations like gelato cakes you can order for a celebration. You can also find Swoon in some other larger cities. Open til 9pm.
IScream, Covered Market – IScream claims to be Oxford’s first Gelataria. Not just serving gelato, there’s also lots of sorbet choices for those wanting a non dairy option.
Alfonso Gelataria, Banbury Rd, Summertown – a summer season ice cream truck serving italian gelato. They also do click and collect.
Banbury
The Cone, Parsons St – a relatively new arrival already making a splash. Pastel decor, they also run ice cream parties, as well as serving up their ice creams to the public. Check social media, as sometimes they have to close down early if there’s super hot weather and need to restock.
Roses of Bloxham, Lock 29, Castle Quay – more than delicious ice cream, they also serve crepes and milkshakes too. Takeaway only but plenty of seating in Lock 29 or out by the canal.
Sheilas Shakes, Parsons St – choose your flavours and combinations. They sometimes run competitions to come up with new flavours. Check social media to find out what special flavours are on.
Bicester
Oliphant’s Artisan Ice Cream, Bicester village – ice cream truck serving up to shoppers wanting a treat.
The Milk Shed, Weston on the Green – popular out of town cafe, serves great sundaes and has a large choice of flavours of ice cream.
Henley on Thames
The Willow Basket, Friday Street – ice cream specialist, inside a refill/wholefoods shop. Loads of flavours (including sorbets), and you can choose an edible cup to avoid waste.
Witney
Alfonso Gelataria, High St – the 3rd location, serving 14 flavours of gelato and sorbet at this shop..
Woodstock
Alfonso Gelataria, High St – 1st shop they opened, serving 12 flavour choices.
With new ice cream parlours opening all the time, there’s more and more choice to locals and visitors to Oxfordshire alike. I love that there’s so many options in our town now, although we do need to go into town later than normal as they’re never open early enough for when we’re usually shopping.
If you’re looking for places to visit while you’re in the county, I share lots of what’s on offer in my days out in Oxfordshire post.
N’s a strawberry ice cream fan, while I’m more likely to go for pistachio or mint choc chip. What would be your choice?
