The big transition from baby and toddler swimming

What's the big transition from baby swimming to child swimming lessons - Bubbablue and me

I couldn’t imagine not having swum with N from a young age. My own journey with learning to swim was very up and down from age 5 to 7, and the OH isn’t keen on swimming, so I wanted to make sure N was capable of swimming as a child.  We started his lessons at 3 months old along with most of my NCT group in a Water Babies class together. In the 5 1/2 years he’s been to swimming lessons,… Continue Reading “The big transition from baby and toddler swimming”

Technical toddler swimming

swimming boy

It feels like we’re on a real roll at the moment with N’s swimming.  He’s really enjoying it, and even though there’s certain things he still moans about doing, he will eventually give them a go…if it is only the once. I can’t believe how technical the strokes are being taught, even though the children still seem so young.  Some in our class can swim 10 metres without an aid, so it shouldn’t really be surprising given so much of… Continue Reading “Technical toddler swimming”

Baby swimming vs toddler swimming – what’s the difference?

baby swimming vs toddler swimming - Bubbbalue and me

We’ve (well, I’ve) been going to Water Babies swimming lessons with N since he was almost 3 months old.  I think that means we’re pretty qualified in sharing thoughts on the differences between baby swimming and toddler swimming (and I’m talking toddler through to preschool age here).  Is there really that much of a difference or is it that much of a transition? Obviously it very much depends on the child, how frequently you go swimming outside of lessons, and… Continue Reading “Baby swimming vs toddler swimming – what’s the difference?”

Mum or Dad, who should take the baby swimming?

When N started at Water Babies, there wasn’t really any question of who would take him swimming.  Largely because I was the one who had time off work and did everything with him, but also because the OH didn’t really feel that strongly about swimming lessons for babies and isn’t keen on swimming himself.  Even on holidays, he’ll paddle but won’t really swim. In our first swimming class, it mostly comprised our NCT class plus a couple of other mums… Continue Reading “Mum or Dad, who should take the baby swimming?”

Swimming…the return

swimming boy

It’s all very well planning to take your toddler swimming throughout the summer holidays, but actually doing so proves harder. It started so well, with us making a trip to the local pool for the first 2 weekends.  Unfortunately after that, swimming became bottom of the pile after family visiting, and getting out and about outdoors to various fetes, fayres and shows.  It wasn’t helped by the generally good weather we had as well.  Who wants to go swimming in… Continue Reading “Swimming…the return”

Swimming and Singing

swimming boy

You’d not think that singing would go with swimming, but when it comes to taking babies and toddlers swimming, it’s the norm.  In fact most pre-school children’s activities involve singing at some stage, so I should really be that surprised that it goes hand in hand with our Water Babies classes. N loves singing and music, so he’s always loved the parts of our swimming lessons that involve the songs and relevant activities or movements.  It also makes me smile… Continue Reading “Swimming and Singing”

Swimming woggle success

swimming boy

Whoop whoop.  For the first time N swam a whole width on his own with the woggle. Usually he kicks when you’re holding on to him, but as soon as you let go, he stops kicking.  But this time (and the toddlers were having a race – maybe he’s got my competitive nature), he kept kicking all the way across the pool and even did some arm stuff.  He does more breast stroke with his arms than the doggy paddle… Continue Reading “Swimming woggle success”

Swimming backstroke

practising swimming on his back and kicking

“On our back we lie nice and flat” so goes the song at Waterbabies to prepare them for swimming backstroke.  But until now (and we’ve been swimming since 4 months old, he’s now 27 months), N’s flat out refused to be on his back in the swimming pool. Occasionally he’ll ‘sit’ and kick his legs for certain tasks, but generally anything on his back he’s always protested about and wriggled over onto his front. But today, first class back after… Continue Reading “Swimming backstroke”

Not counting my chickens before they hatch, but…

swimming boy

Finger’s crossed I’m not jinxing it, but we had a successful swimming session yesterday. Of course, it was the last lesson before we finished; I cancelled as things seemed to still be getting worse rather than over the wobbles which had been going on since October last year.  I’m not getting too optimistic, but we’re hopefully going to go back and continue rather than stopping given that I want to make sure this isn’t a once off. If you followed… Continue Reading “Not counting my chickens before they hatch, but…”
