What’s for breakfast – cereal or toast?

Given that this week is National Breakfast Week, I thought it was quite appropriate to think about breakfast in our house…or out of our house.

I’m a big believer in breakfast, even though I find I tend to eat more through the day if I eat breakfast early on.  But with nursery, work, and the OH having an early start, we do tend to eat all over the place.

The OH always goes out early and does work first before then eating breakfast at the farm before coming over to see us when we get up. Three days a week N has breakfast at nursery…except he usually is hungry before then so wants breakfast at home as soon as he gets up.  It really winds me up when I’m paying for food for him at nursery.  I tend to take my breakfast to work, especially if N’s waiting until nursery for breakfast. The other 2 weekdays we eat breakfast together.

If I don’t make him something for breakfast, he’ll just make it himself.  Usually he gets up early, I go with him downstairs and get him something to eat, then leave him watching a dvd while I go back upstairs and sleep until my alarm goes off. One morning a few months ago, I came downstairs to the smell of toast.  And N sitting in the living room with an empty plate of crumbs. Yes, he’d dragged a chair over to fridge, got butter out, a knife, some bread, and toasted it in the toaster, then attempted to butter it, and sat down to eat it.  I couldn’t believe it.

He’s usually a bit of a pain with breakfast. He can just never decide what to have.  Mostly he’s not that keen on toast, he sometimes has raisin bread (although the Sainsbury’s version isn’t going down well at the moment but untoasted (bleurgh!). It’s rare he eats cereal at home, unless he’s eating with his dad, and then he’ll scoff down 2 shredded wheat.  A yoghurt goes down well, but most of the time he wants sandwiches.  Just very strange. Personally I don’t know why he’s not that keen on toast.  For me, I could eat lots of it in one go given the chance.

What I really need is a great toaster which has wide and narrow bread options, plus a warmer on top.  My current one still works although the OH always does toast on the Aga instead.  No idea why, because the toast stays firm and the butter doesn’t sink in but he obviously likes it that way.

Anyway, if you’re a breakfast or toast fan and would like to try a new toaster, I have one to give away thanks to House of Fraser.

  1. You can’t beat a full English – sadly though not good for the ticker, wish they were! Mmmm bacon, eggs, toast, mushroom *drools* So in reality it’s more a case of cereal and toast 🙂

  2. Good old English Breakfast is my Favourite but since I’ve been trying to eat healthy i love my porridge with coconut milk and lots of fruit i.e. bananas, blueberry’s, strawberry’s etc, its delish 🙂

  3. Nice healthy fry up wouldn’t go a miss however I barely find the time. My favourite ‘on the go’ breakfast is a Blueberry Muffin and Caramel Latte (again nice and healthy, or not!)

  4. I love soft boiled eggs with hot buttered toast cut into soldiers so I can dip them into the yolk (I leave the white because I hate that!) 🙂

  5. A slice of cold toast spread with fridge cold butter, washed down with a cup of delicious green tea. Bliss, the best meal of the day 🙂

  6. I love an ‘ulster fry’ – sausage, bacon, fried egg and lots of fried bread – soda bread, potato bread and fried pancakes

  7. My favorite breakfast is toasted muffins with a slice of black pudding, a poached egg and crispy streaky bacon on top with plenty of cracked black pepper and a steaming mug of tea! 🙂

  8. Full English (or Scottish or Irish or wherever I am). No toast though as it’s a product containing flour which is guaranteed to put weight on you. And I don’t like cereal.

Actually the best breakfast ever would be a full English served to me as a guest in a five star hotel. I can dream!

  9. toast is a general fave in our house the teenagers make it on the go the little ones sit and nibble little squares with jam on and i dmit i love a crumpet in the morn needless to say my toaster has seen better days

  10. I love the continental style breakfast, with fresh rolls, different types of cheese and ham, with fresh fruit juice (orange or maybe red grape), just so delicious.

  11. My favourite would be peanut butter & chocolate spread on toast! But in the cold weather I tend to eat a lot of porridge in the winter – with cinnamon and honey on it.

  12. At the moment, I have Special K with Alpro Soya, a dollop of yoghurt on top with some blue berries and a cup of Lemon & Ginger tea.

  13. I have the same most mornings.. either weetabix or an oats so simple wholegrain musli sachet with loads of natural yog, fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.

  14. For a quick breakfast, toast. Brown bread, well toasted, butter and marmalade.
At the weekend a full English, with toast of course!

  15. I usually have porridge as its healthy and filling, and I like it! But for a treat I like toast with butter and strawberry jam! I could just eat a piece right now…daydreaming away here!

  16. It would be fruit salad with natural yoghurt and a sprinkle of granola for me. I know it sounds really healthy and worthy but I do really love it.

  17. Not your traditional English breakfast. Far from it. Chana Puri. We make this for our weekend breakfasts. It’s basically a fried soft Indian bread with a very mild and creamy chickpea curry which we add diced potatoes and coriander to. It’s delicious. Try it if you haven’t already.

      1. Thanks. All your local Indian cafe type places serve this during breakfast hours also. I recommend it to all unless you’re on a strict diet. Vegan friendly too =)

  18. Oh wow what a great toaster, our is on its way out! Crusty white bread toasted with loads of melty butter!
I am the same as you if I eat breakfast too early I just end up eating so much more throughout the day, I used to not eat breakfast at all, but since I had Boo I am making the effort and we all have breakfast every day.

  19. What a lovely giveaway hunny. I am in need of a new toaster so would be great to win one. For all these munchkins that eat toast everyday it gets used alot lol Or maybe my kids are the only ones that live off toast. lol

  20. Wow. Tough decision! I could eat Brekkie all day. My fave will probably have to be porridge with brown sugar and blueberries.
