Initially, when I was asked if I’d like to review Bio Kult Infantis, I wasn’t sure.  I’m not a big believer in probiotics and healthy food and drinks, or supplements if someone is eating a well-balanced diet.  N definitely does and always has done.  But when I noticed that it could help with intolerances, I decided it might be worth giving it a shot.

N is lactose intolerant.  We haven’t had it confirmed, but after having nasty poos for ages, it wasn’t until he was 2 ½ years when nursery asked whether we’d considered he might have an intolerance.

All the usual thoughts went through my head.  But within a day of stopping cows milk, his poos were normal.  Luckily this seems to be his only symptom, although I’m not sure if he could describe any aches/pains and the like if he had them.  So he has lactofree soft cheese, milk (or rice milk), cheese and butter, and whatever alternative yoghurts he fancies.  Oh and sorbet in place of ice cream.  But if dairy products are cooked, he seems fine.  Likewise hard cheese or butter doesn’t do much damage.  It seems to be the liquid items that aren’t good for him.

I’m hoping that N will grow out of the intolerance (the OH doesn’t believe it’s an issue anyway, so he doesn’t help things trying to feed him ice cream…’no Daddy, I want my ice cream sorbet’.  At least N’s well trained.  But Bio Kult Infantis could help.

Bio Kult infantis is an advanced probiotic multistrain formula suitable for babies, toddlers and young children.  Probiotics are live bacteria that are naturally present in a healthy digestive system.  Bio Kult infantis can help rebalance and replace good bacteria that might have been lost.  It includes:

We received a pack with 16 sachets in.  For N’s age, 1 sachet a day is the dosage required, and it can be added to milk or water. For infants it can be added to formula or to the breast before breastfeeding.  I was a bit worried about how I was going to give this to N, as quite often he’ll try and make his own drink or dish up his food.  But I’ve been putting it into a cup or beaker or water or squash, and he’s not noticed anything different about them.  Because I was stirring it in a while before he might drink the drink (in his drink for tea), it sometimes looked a bit settled in the drink.  But N still didn’t notice.

We haven’t really seen any change at the moment but when I spoke to Natalie, one of Bio Kult’s nutritional therapists, she said it would take a bit longer to see any benefits.  She also explained a bit to me about probiotics.

Essentially we all have good and bad bacteria in our bodies.  The good balance out the bad, and help your immune system and digestive system. Good bacteria also produce enzymes which help you digest food, but if there’s an imbalance and not enough good bacteria, it can mean you end up with an intolerance to certain foods.  In N’s case, he is likely to have lower amounts of the lactase enzyme which helps break down the lactose/milk sugar.  Bio Kult has been tested and found that it does produce lactase, which means that taking it regularly could help him rebalance his levels and therefore reduce his intolerance.

Natalie also explained that the imbalance can happen even as long ago as birth.  Stress, anti-biotics and infection can cause the bacterial imbalance, so N’s c section birth, with me having been induced on a drip for 13 hours beforehand, and then him refusing to breastfeed other than a tiny bit of hand expressed colostrum and a small amount of pumped milk, might not have helped things and led to his intolerance.  He’s rarely had antibiotics so that at least won’t have impacted things.

I found it really interesting finding out about Bio Kult and the science behind it (I never thought I’d say that!).  Although we’ve not seen much of an impact yet, I think it’s probably worth us sticking with it a bit longer to see if N’s intolerance improves.

Other symptoms Bio Kult Infantis can help with include diarrhoea, allergies  like eczema and hayfever,intolerances, low immunity, colic and reflux.
