Parragon book review: The Night before Christmas
I love The Night before Christmas story, and N does have a copy of it. It is however, really hard to find a nice version that’s not too americanised, and that is true to the original wording. So I was looking forward to receiving the Parragon Books version as part of the book buddy scheme to see how it compared.
The cover is beautiful – glitter effect to show the snowy roofs. N was even distracted from watching Peter Rabbit when I showed him the book!
The illustrations, as usual with Parragon Books, are bright and clear, and flow well from one page to the next. The layout is perfect for N, as there’s not too much prose on each page. He does have a tendency to want to turn pages earlier than I’ve read everything, so a shorter number of words per page works well for us in picture books.
The prose is more true to the original poem as well, unlike the previous version we had. There’s a couple of terms I don’t remember from my childhood original, but they fit fine, otherwise the great poem is as I remember.

I want this book to be one of our Christmas traditions, and as N loves the story already, I can see it really helping to build Christmas excitement in the run up through Advent.

Ooh, it is the perfect Christmas story for the build up.
I love this story, and the version Boo has is lovely, too. Am sure to be reading it a lot this month!
