Now That’s What I Call a Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre
It’s been quite a theatre year for me, with more shows to come this year and next. The most recent one was going to see Now That’s What I Call a Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre. The directing and choreography is done by Craig Revel Horwood, with Pippa Evans writing the script.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the plot on booking, but if you’re a fan of the 80s, or simply lived through it during your childhood or teens, then you’ll probably enjoy this musical.
The story is about a Class of 89 reunion in Birmingham with flashbacks to 2 best friends’ final year and turning 18. We see them getting ready to become a nurse, and jetting off to find fame in Hollywood. Gemma’s life in Birmingham, her marriage, her job of dreams. While she tries to stay in contact with ambitious April in LA.
The story is backed up by songs from the 80s, including Tainted Love, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,Gold, Hey Mickey, Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves, and Sweet Dreams. The songs fitted in really well to the story.
There were quite a few funny moments between various characters. And with memories like the Walls Sausages ad and Potato Waffles song, plus not forgetting a Blockbusters style video shop, there’s plenty of reminiscing to do.
I thought the casting was very good. The 4 leads (young and current Gemma and April) were spot on, and their voices blended well. Current Gemma is played by former Eastenders and Goodness Gracious Me actress Nina Wadia, and April is played by musicals pro Melissa Jacques. Both played their parts well, but April in particular was spot on. Her voice was amazing too.
The younger actresses playing the 18 year old versions were also excellent.
Sonia guested at MK appearing as herself, playing an idol from the girls’ teen years. While she doesn’t look any older than years ago, and obviously it fitted into the story, I wasn’t that impressed with the singing. If you’re going to other theatres, there are other guest starts featured – I would have loved to have seen Carol Decker singing China in Your Hand.
One of my favourite parts was the What a Feeling number, when Gemma and sleezy Tim meet. Plus the dance moves from the video.
So many of the scenes are those you can imagine in a small community. Not ignoring the horrors of an old school reunion.
Now That’s What I Call a Musical really is for those of us who remember the 80s and early 90s. There was a 7yo behind us, she wouldn’t have got much of the story, or the meaning behind most of the jokes. They’d pass my 13yo by too. But for anyone who recognises the songs, it’s a great musical to smile and enjoy. Or good for anyone who likes a feelgood friendship story.
Not forgetting at the end, there’s a megamix along with the bows for everyone who wants to take pictures. More of these megamixes please musical producers!
For opening night there were a few seats empty, so I hope the other shows on the tour are full. Milton Keynes was the start of 2024’s tour, and it runs into 2025. You can book via ATG’s website.
I left singing a few of my favourite songs, and looking forward to my next theatre trip.
