A stay at Anglesey Arms Hotel Menai Bridge

Menai Bridge isn’t a pretty town. But its location is handy for getting out and about which is why I’d chosen to stay in that area. Places to stay, when I was booking about 5 months ahead, were quite limited. Anglesey is really popular and people obviously book up early. I decided on the Anglesey Arms, as now N is older there’s less worry about pubs being noisy and keeping him awake.

The pub car park is quite small. We had to come back as it was full during the latter part of Sunday lunch when we initially arrived (a little early for check in). The staff were really welcoming at reception even though we were busy with lunch still.  They also squeezed us in for a dinner reservation on our first night.

The hotel also ask you to book a slot for breakfast so we chose an early slot which worked out fine.

Our room at the Anglesey Arms

There’s no lift, and our room was on the top floor, so hard on my unfit body and legs. It was nice to be at the end of the corridor with just us and another room. Although the hotel is right on a busy roundabout it wasn’t too noisy. We could open one of the windows for air.

The family room was lovely, all muted pale blue and wood. we had a large double and single bed. Plus there was a desk/dressing table, and low table andchairs. Although if you’ve a larger than average backside the chairs were not big enough at the back.

There was no wardrobe, although there was a hanging rail which was fine for us. If we were staying longer we’d want drawers, and somewhere to put our cases, but we were fine to live out of our cases for 2 nights.

One bonus was the fast free WiFi, and multiple plug sockets. I counted 8, and all in sensible places.

There was bottled water, hot drink sachets (including hot chocolate which is rarely on tea trays), plus a selection of biscuits which went down well with N.

The bathroom was a good size and nice and clean. An opening opaque window was nice to see, and the loo roll was good quality.  The only issue was the banging bathroom door when it was closed and the windows were all blowing a draught. N wasn’t best pleased that there was no lock on the door either.

My only problem was the shower. We couldn’t work how to get the big rain shower head doing more than a cold dribble. But the first morning I struggled for ages trying to get warmer water, but then more than a few seconds of flow. Finally it did kick in. N had a better time of it. By the next morning, it seemed to kick in on permanent flow straight away and was warmer, so that was good.

The restaurant

Because there didn’t look like there would be much in the town centre that would be open on a Sunday evening, we decided to book into the Anglesey Arms restaurant. Luckily they had a table for us at the time we wanted, but as we left they were having to turn people away.

The restaurant is nicely decorated, with quite a casual nautical feel to it. It felt roomy and the staff were attentive without being overly so. There are different areas, so good if you’re a group and want to be off in a room on your own.

They have a Sunday menu but we decided not to go for roasts. The drinks weren’t too expensive, but the food is on the pricy side similar to our foody pubs back home. I was surprised at the prices considering our local pubs tend to cater for the Soho Farmhouse crowd and are on the expensive side.

N chose the steak which was of course the most expensive item on the menu. He said it was worth it – well cooked, the chips were delicious, and it came with roasted tomato, beer batter onion rings and some salad leaves.  I opted for a crispy beef noodle salad. I couldn’t taste the honey and soy dressing until I got to the bottom of the dish. But the beef was really nice in its batter, and it was a nice light meal.

Starters were around the £8 mark, and mains ranged from £13 to £25.  They also offered some tasty sounding desserts but we didn’t have room for them.

Breakfast at the Anglesey Arms

Breakfast included a small buffet offering of continental. We did have to wait for it all to come out – delicious hot pastries, normal cereal offer, fruit and juices. But someone else asked for the yoghurt stated and there wasn’t any.

Hot orders were taken from the menu. N went for a full breakfast with everything (choice of 3 egg types). He did pretty well with it, leaving only a small amount. But decided he definitely isn’t keen on black pudding.  I chose eggs benedict – delicious, although a bit too much ham for my liking. There was also a veggie cooked breakfast offer, porridge and a couple of other choices.

On our second morning we wanted to leave by 7.45, and knew we’d not have time for breakfast at 7.30. They were happy to make us bacon baps to take away with us. We were ready to leave by 7.35 as planned. Both of us said it was delicious.

Would we stay again?

Yes definitely. It’s a bit of a walk into town (although worse coming out again back uphill).

Once we were parked we didn’t really want to take the car out again, because it was so popular on weekends and bank holidays for lunch and the pub. The car park is awkwardly shaped in places, so it’s hard to manoeuvre if there’s no spaces.  There are a couple of electric chargers in the car park. But we saw people struggling to access them because of bad parking over 2 spaces.

Other than that, we enjoyed our stay at the Anglesey Arms Hotel Menai Bridge. The rooms were lovely, the bed comfortable, and we had everything in the room we needed (including hot chocolate which is quite often missing). Food was good (both breakfast and dinner). And all the hotel staff we met were helpful and friendly.

We would definitely stay again using it as a base to explore the area.

The bedroom looks great and how fantastic there was plenty of plug sockets.
The food looks good too and hooray for the bacon baps! x

    1. They were so lovely and accommodating. And they were even on the ball with the bacon baps, even though we arrived downstairs before the breakfast slot even started.
